Why Postoperative Nutrition Matters
Your body is embarking on a remarkable journey of healing and proper nutrition serves as the cornerstone of this process. Every nutrient you consume plays a role in supporting tissue repair, reducing inflammation, and boosting your overall health.
We highly recommend adopting a high protein, low sodium diet for at least two weeks prior to and at least two weeks after surgery. This dietary approach is designed to optimize your healing process by reducing inflammation swiftly, promoting enhanced wound healing, and maintaining stable blood sugar levels.

Key Nutrients for Your Recovery
-
Protein: Think of protein as the building blocks for your body's repair work. Incorporating sources like lean meats, fish, eggs, legumes, and dairy into your meals will provide your body with the necessary amino acids to rebuild and heal.
-
Vitamins and Minerals: Your body requires a variety of vitamins and minerals to support the healing process. Foods rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, zinc, and iron, such as colorful fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains, should be staples in your diet.
-
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These healthy fats are your allies in fighting inflammation and promoting healing. Include foods like fatty fish, flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts to harness the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids.
-
Hydration: Hydration is key to maintaining optimal bodily functions, especially during the recovery period. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day to support tissue hydration and overall healing.
-
Fiber: Don't overlook the importance of fiber in your diet, as it aids in digestion and prevents constipation, a common concern post-surgery. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes are excellent sources of fiber to keep things moving smoothly.

Here are a few gentle reminders to support you along your recovery journey:
-
Patience and Self-Compassion: Remember, healing takes time, and it's okay to take things one step at a time. Be patient with your body, and treat yourself with kindness as you progress through each stage of recovery.
-
Listen to Your Body: Your body has a remarkable way of communicating its needs. Pay attention to how you feel after eating certain foods, and adjust your diet accordingly to ensure maximum comfort and healing.
-
Celebrate Your Progress: Take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate each milestone achieved along your recovery journey. Every small victory is a testament to your strength and resilience.

We recommend preparing ahead of time so you have meals prepped and ready to go after surgery. A simple rule is eating primarily from the perimeter of the grocery store (fresh) rather than the aisles!
